From Kamae, Kihon Dosa and Kihon Waza, to bokken work and practical application, there was so much to learn from everything that we did. And the demonstration at the end of the seminar by Sensei Joe was quite simply phenomenal. I’m still left wondering quite how someone can move that quickly regardless of whether they are standing up or on their knees.

Chida sensei started with the most basic of the basic principles of Aikido, and he made us feel it through different exercise. Lots of them! Starting from how your center should feel to how your kamae should be…strong! We had three days of what some would say are “hidden secrets” of Aikido but what are really such fundamental basics that I think a lot of people either forget to train them or forget how important they are.

The training began and was focused on the absolute basics of Yoshinkan Aikido – the Kihon Dosa, breaking it down into its component parts and practicing them both individually and with a partner. In fact the focus of the training sessions for the next few days was all about kihon and how it affects everything we do in Aikido and how these basics make all the techniques we practice work.

Terada Hanshi embodies warmth of character which is part of the spirit of Aikido and everyone around him held him in such high respect, reinforcing what an important link he is to the very roots of Aikido. Throughout the seminar he demonstrated physically and verbally the importance of good form in Aikido how it shapes a technique in itself and the importance of maintaining a strong connection with Uke allowing the technique to be effective.
